Bequia

Admiralty Bay, Princess Margaret Beach, and the most genuine local harbour in the Grenadines.

Best time to sail

December through July. February to April is peak; June and July are quieter. Carnival in early August (we don't operate) is the loudest week.

Bequia is the largest of the Grenadines after Canouan — seven square miles, a few thousand residents, and a working harbour at Admiralty Bay that has been the centre of Caribbean small-boat life for two centuries. It is the most genuine of the islands: not exclusive like Mustique, not deserted like the Cays, just a quiet, friendly harbour town with the best fish market in the chain and a half-dozen excellent restaurants along the leeward coast.

We anchor in Admiralty Bay — wide, well-protected, and easy to walk ashore from. The Belmont Walkway runs the length of the bay's leeward shore, linking restaurants, the model boat-building shops, and the Tuesday-evening jump-up at Mac's Pizza. Princess Margaret Beach is a 15-minute tender ride to the south, with the best swimming on the island and the open-air Jack's Bar at the south end.

Bequia is the right destination for guests who want a longer stop ashore on a charter week — there are more restaurants here than on every other Grenadine combined. From here it's a comfortable 20-mile reach back south to Canouan or 10 miles further north to St. Vincent.

Anchorages

Admiralty Bay

The main harbour. Anchoring or moorings depending on busyness. Customs and immigration at the port building, fuel at the dinghy dock, easy walk to Belmont Walkway restaurants.

Princess Margaret Beach

Wide arc of white sand on the south side of Admiralty Bay. Anchor or pick up a mooring; Jack's Bar at the south end serves lunch and a sunset rum punch.

Friendship Bay

Quiet windward-side bay on the south coast — better in settled trades. Long sweep of sand, only one small resort, and a beach restaurant (the Beach House) for an unrushed lunch.

Ashore

Belmont Walkway

The waterfront promenade through Admiralty Bay — restaurants, model boat-builder workshops, the local fish market, and the boutique hotels of the leeward shore.

Mac's Pizza

The Tuesday-evening jump-up. A Bequia institution — wood-fired pizza, the local steel-pan band, drinks at the long bar overlooking the harbour. Walk back to the dinghy at the end of the night.

Jack's Bar

Open-air bar at the south end of Princess Margaret Beach — the best sunset spot in the bay. Limited menu, simple drinks, glass-clear swim from the boat.
